Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a non-invasive laser treatment for open-angle glaucoma that lowers intraocular pressure by improving fluid drainage from the eye. Unlike traditional glaucoma surgery, SLT does not require incisions, implants, or significant downtime. The procedure uses low-energy laser pulses to stimulate the eye's drainage tissue and improve natural fluid outflow.

SLT offers several benefits for glaucoma patients. The treatment is performed in-office, typically takes less than ten minutes per eye, and involves minimal risk. Many patients experience meaningful reductions in eye pressure, and because the procedure can be repeated if necessary, it offers long-term flexibility for glaucoma management. SLT may also help reduce dependence on glaucoma eye drops and their associated side effects.

While SLT is highly effective for many patients, it is not a permanent solution. The effects typically last between three and five years, after which additional treatment may be necessary. Some patients may experience temporary redness, mild inflammation, or discomfort after treatment. Results can vary, and some individuals may still require medications or additional glaucoma procedures to maintain pressure control.

SLT is performed in a doctor's office using anesthetic eye drops for comfort. During the procedure, a specialized low-energy laser is applied to the eye's drainage tissue to improve fluid outflow and lower intraocular pressure. The treatment generally takes between five and ten minutes per eye, and patients can return home shortly afterward. Following treatment, patients may be monitored briefly and prescribed anti-inflammatory eye drops if needed.

Recovery is typically quick and straightforward. Most patients resume normal activities immediately after treatment. Mild irritation, temporary blurry vision, or redness may occur for a few hours but generally resolves quickly. Follow-up appointments are important to monitor intraocular pressure and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Full pressure reduction may take several weeks to develop.

SLT has been shown to be highly effective in lowering intraocular pressure and managing glaucoma. The landmark LiGHT trial demonstrated that SLT performed as effectively as glaucoma medications for many patients while reducing treatment-related side effects. Many patients experience long-lasting pressure reduction, decreased reliance on eye drops, and improved quality of life. Because SLT is safe and repeatable, it remains one of the most valuable treatment options available for open-angle glaucoma.
