When Flashes and Floaters Could Signal a Serious Retina Problem
Eye floaters and flashes are common visual disturbances that often occur as part of the natural aging process. While many cases are harmless, a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, or changes in vision may indicate a retinal tear or retinal detachment that requires immediate medical attention.
At Parker Murri Vision, we provide comprehensive retinal evaluations for patients experiencing new flashes, floaters, blurred vision, or sudden visual changes. Early diagnosis can help prevent retinal complications and protect long term vision.
Benefits of Prompt Retina Evaluation
Protect Your Vision When New Symptoms Appear
Sudden flashes and floaters should never be ignored. A thorough retinal examination can help determine whether symptoms are harmless age-related changes or signs of a more serious retinal condition.
Detect Retinal Tears Early
Prompt diagnosis can identify retinal tears before they progress to retinal detachment.
Advanced Retinal Imaging
Comprehensive retinal testing helps evaluate the health of the retina and vitreous with precision.
Peace of Mind for Vision Changes
Many flashes and floaters are harmless, but an eye exam can confirm whether treatment is needed.
Understanding Eye Flashes and Floaters
What Causes Flashes, Floaters, and Posterior Vitreous Detachment?
As we age, the vitreous gel inside the eye naturally becomes thinner and begins separating from the retina. This process, known as posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), is extremely common and often causes patients to notice flashes of light, floating spots, cobwebs, strands, or shadows moving through their field of vision.
While most cases of PVD do not lead to serious complications, some patients develop retinal tears or retinal detachments as the vitreous pulls away from the retina. Because these conditions can threaten vision, sudden symptoms should always be evaluated by an experienced eye doctor.
